Yesterday I picked Ava Grace up from Preschool and she was sporting this homemade poppy cut from construction paper and tissue paper, and it was totally rad.
She was also very excited and told me all about it and how we were supposed to wear them to remember soldiers.
It was a great opportunity to talk a little bit about Remembrance Day and not just let the day slide by like any other.
Since I've been out of school Institutions it can be easy to forget to commemorate the day like we used to in school assemblies and class projects.
Ava Grace actually knows a song about flowers and soldiers, because I've been singing it to her since she was a baby. It's a song that floated around my house when I was a kid, and it always touched me.
I know it's actually a peace protest song, but no matter what your thoughts or feelings on war and peace, the song still beautifully reminds us of the sacrifice paid by the young generations who fought for we what have today, and the loss that war brings to all of us.
Ava Grace asked me to sing the song to her yesterday, and I thought maybe, I'd post the lyrics here today.
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the flowers gone;
Gone to young girls; every one.
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn.
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone to young men; every one.
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time passing.
Where have all the young men gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the young men gone;
Gone to soldiers; every one.
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn.
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing,
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the soldiers gone;
Gone to graveyards; every one
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn.
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago.
Where have all the graveyards gone
Gone to flowers; every one
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn.
Remembering today, all the brave men and women to whom we owe so much.
